How It Works

Eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. From Earth, it appears that the Sun is being blocked out. This occurs because the Moon, while much smaller than both the Earth and the Sun, has the same apparent size in the sky as the Sun due to its closer proximity to Earth. This will not always be the case, as the Moon is slowly moving away from the Earth - in a few million years, it will be too far away to fully eclipse the Sun!

Eclipse glasses are made from a material that blocks the most harmful parts of the Sun's light. You can safely look at the Sun while wearing these glasses, as they block UVA and UVB light. These parts of the Sun's rays can severely damage the delicate parts of your eyes.
